Oleum (Fuming Sulfuric Acid)
A highly concentrated form of sulfuric acid containing dissolved sulfur trioxide (SO₃), used in specialized industrial and chemical applications. It is primarily utilized for producing sulfuric acid concentrations above 98% and is handled exclusively within closed, controlled systems to ensure safety and efficiency.
Properties:
- A highly concentrated form of sulfuric acid, consisting of H2SO4 with dissolved sulfur trioxide (SO3).
- Called “fuming” because it releases dense white fumes when exposed to moist air.
- Used in chemical industries such as sulfonation, as well as in some pharmaceutical and petroleum industries72.
